Corfu Town’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a noticeably different character to most Greek-island capitals, shaped by centuries of Venetian, French and British rule — arcaded streets, a cricket pitch on the Spianada square, and grand old buildings throughout.

The old town’s fortresses (the Old and New Venetian forts) are an engaging, inexpensive family outing, and several good beaches lie a short drive or bus ride away for the beach portion of a stay.

A genuinely sophisticated evening scene by Greek-resort standards — restaurants around the Spianada and the old town’s lanes make for a good couples’ night out rather than a beach-bar scene.

The old town has some cobbled streets, but the wide Spianada square and seafront are flat and pleasant — a rewarding, walkable base for older visitors interested in history.
Best time to visit
May to October for the beaches nearby; the old town itself is a good visit for much of the year.
