Lagos pairs a genuinely historic old town (with sections of its old city walls still standing) with some of the Algarve’s most dramatic coastline nearby, including the famous Ponta da Piedade rock formations and sea caves.

Meia Praia is a long, flat, easy family beach right by the town, while boat trips to the Ponta da Piedade grottoes are a memorable (if slightly more adventurous) family outing for older children.
Couples, teens & nightlife
A genuinely good range of restaurants and bars in the old town, with a livelier young-adult scene around a few central streets — Lagos manages both a good night out and a romantic dinner reasonably well.
Seniors & accessibility
The old town has cobbled streets and some slopes, but is compact and rewarding to explore at a gentle pace, with Meia Praia’s flat seafront as an easy alternative.
Best time to visit
May to September for the beaches and boat trips; the old town is pleasant to visit for much of the year.
