Overview
Maspalomas is best known for its dramatic sand dunes — a protected natural reserve right behind the beach — and its 19th-century lighthouse. It sits alongside Playa del Inglés but has a noticeably calmer, more spread-out feel, with more golf courses and villa-style accommodation than high-rise hotels.
Families & toddlers
The beach is wide and safe for swimming, and the dunes themselves are a genuine adventure for children to explore (bring water and sun protection — there’s no shade out there). Several family resorts here have large pool complexes, useful on the days you want a break from the sun.
Couples, teens & nightlife
This is a quieter base for couples than Playa del Inglés proper, with good seafood restaurants along the dunes’ edge and gentle evening walks rather than a big nightlife scene — though the Yumbo Centre’s bars are only a short taxi or walk away for anyone who wants both.
Seniors & accessibility
Flat terrain throughout, several golf courses, and a generally slower pace make this one of the more comfortable Gran Canaria bases for older or less mobile visitors, with plenty of accessible beachfront dining.
Best time to visit
Same mild, sunny climate as the rest of southern Gran Canaria year-round — a genuine winter-sun option as much as a summer one.
