Overview
Sliema is a polished, largely modern seafront town facing Malta’s capital, Valletta, across the harbour, with a long promenade popular for walking and running, and a strong base of shops, restaurants and ferries rather than a classic sandy beach.
Families & toddlers
The promenade itself is flat and easy for a family stroll, and rocky sea-access swimming spots (rather than sandy beaches) are common along this stretch — worth knowing if a proper sandy beach is the priority, in which case Malta’s north-coast beaches are a short bus ride away.
Couples, teens & nightlife
A good range of restaurants and bars along the front, with easy ferry access into Valletta for an evening out in the capital — a versatile, well-connected base for couples.
Seniors & accessibility
The seafront promenade is one of the flattest, most pleasant walks on the island, and Sliema’s ferry links make it an easy, low-effort base for sightseeing without needing to drive.
Best time to visit
Malta is mild through winter and hot in summer; April, May, September and October offer comfortable sightseeing weather.
