Zakynthos Town (Zante Town), the island’s capital, is a proper working town rather than a purpose-built resort, rebuilt in a distinctive Venetian-influenced style after a major 1953 earthquake, with a real harbour and local life alongside its hotels.

Not a classic beach-resort base itself, but a good one for exploring the island by car — the famous Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach and the Blue Caves are both reachable on day trips, genuinely memorable for families with older children.
Couples, teens & nightlife
A calmer, more local evening scene than the island’s dedicated resorts — real Greek tavernas rather than a bar strip, well suited to couples wanting an authentic base.

The town itself is flat along the harbour and manageable, making it a comfortable base for older visitors who’d rather see real island life than a purpose-built strip.
